Stop Your Dog Biting and Nipping

"How to Train A Dog Not To Bite!"

Biting is a bad habit that we often reinforce by accident when our dogs are puppies, so dog bite prevention is important at an early stage.  This is because many people and especially children find it fun when a puppy bites and nibbles on their fingers.  It is very important that you do not allow this type of play with your puppy to prevent the bad habit of biting or nipping to begin.  This type of play actually teaches the puppy that they can bite skin, when we really don’t want them to.

"How to stop puppy from biting?" If you have a puppy that tries to bite and nip, there are two methods that you can use to stop this habit.  The first route is to allow the puppy to nip at you and then act hurt and alarmed.  When the puppy bites at you, yell and turn away.  The puppy will want attention from you, but will not understand why you are not playing.  When the puppy nips again, repeat the procedure.  The puppy should learn quickly that this is not a fun game to play and will stop nipping.

Some puppies will not understand and they may keep trying to nip.  For these puppies it is necessary to scare them.  You can use toss rings that make a lot of noise or your own noisemaker.  Whatever you use, it should be loud when dropped.  When the puppy attempts to bite or nip at you, drop the item on the floor next to them and scream “no!”  The loud noise and your screaming should stop the puppy in his tracks.  If he tries again, repeat the procedure.  It should not take the puppy long to figure out that this game is not fun.

If your puppy still does not understand you can get personal with the pup.  In the wild, when a puppy is bad, the mother will scruff the puppy by the loose skin on the back of their neck and relocate them to wherever she needs.  This shows the puppy that their mother is dominant over them.  You can use the same concept with your puppy.  When the puppy bites or nips, scruff the puppy by grasping the skin on the back of their neck, hold them up and yell “no!”  Do not be too rough and don’t shake them, but be firm enough that they know they have done wrong.  When you scruff the puppy, he knows that he has done something wrong and it also reminds him that you are dominant over him.

Biting and nipping by a puppy is annoying and can lead to problems later on but an adult dog that bites is a serious liability. Even a small dog biting is a problem but the larger breeds can be extremely dangerous. We regularly see instances of people (especially small children) being injured or even killed by untrained dogs when left in an unsafe environment. Let's face it, if you can't get your dog to stop biting and be sure that he is safe and trustworthy among people or children and with other dogs, then the only responsible thing you can do is to let him go to someone who can!
