How To Potty Train A Puppy

Did you just make a recent addition to your family? Have you just brought home a tiny little version of man's best friend? If you have, the odds are likely, you're in the process of learning how to potty train a puppy. This process isn't a fun or easy one, but of course, is one of much necessity unless you want to spend the rest of your life cleaning up messes. I can't think of anyone who wants to do that.

There are a few steps that you can take to teach your new puppy how to become potty trained. Above anything else, patience is needed. Realize that your puppy is much like a baby, they have no comprehension of what is expected of them, so they need your guiding hand to teach them the ways of the world.

If you have a new puppy, you ought to buy yourself a dog crate. Depending on the size of the breed of dog that you have purchased, you need to get a crate that will accommodate your puppy in the future. Make sure to ask the breeder or pet shop owner where you purchased your animal or the animal shelter where you adopted your animal to find out exactly what size crate you should buy for the animal when it's full grown.

Crating your animals while you are away during the day or night has only gained popularity, recently. Many frustrated puppy and dog owners over the years have lost furniture, clothing, shoes and more expensively, flooring and carpet to animals who were closed in rooms to try to keep them from wandering all over the house and doing their business.

In order to get your new puppy into the thought process of needing to go to the bathroom outside, you should take several steps. The first step you should take is that of making sure that your puppy gets plenty or outside time. It is easiest if you take your pet out at regularly scheduled intervals in order to get them on a schedule of going outside to use the bathroom.

Once your puppy realizes that he or she will be going outside soon, it is easier to get them to hold their needs. Positive reinforcement is key in this situation. When your puppy goes outside and does their business, praise them. Make sure they know that what they are doing is a very good thing. Animals react favorably to positive reinforcement, especially when they are young. It is best to start the learning process as early as possible for your pet.

Make sure to put puppy pads out when your animal is not crated and not outside. This will keep damage to your flooring to a minimum. Let the puppy know when it does its business on the puppy pads that it is good, but do not praise it too much. You want the animal to know that if they cannot wait to go outside, they are at least doing a very good thing by not going on the carpet.

When you bring a new puppy home for the first time, it's a learning process for everyone. You can potty train a puppy fairly easily if you're willing to put the time and effort into it.
